Being broke sucks.
Maybe your parents cut you off from the credit card after a super expensive Uber ride.
Maybe the work study checks are barely covering text books.
Maybe you’re living on your own for the first time and didn’t realize how much that A/C was going to jack up your electric bill.
Whatever the reason it really sucks.
At least you’re going to school in Western Mass. It may not always seem like it from within the confines of campus but there’s more to Western Mass than corn fields, dive bars and pizza places. Not that there’s anything wrong with those things.
There are plenty of things to do and eat on a budget in Western Mass. So, once you’ve had enough dollar store ramen and Popov shots get off campus and give some of these a try.

Cheap Live Music
You don’t have to cram yourself into a musty basement at a secret house show to see live music on the cheap.
Plenty of venues around here are All Ages or 18+ and charge little or no cover.
It would be great if you could dig deep and set aside a fiver for a tip though. Chances are the band is as broke as you are.
Impress your profs by doing some off syllabus learning. Western Mass has a ridiculous number of museums. Many are free or cheap to enter or offer student discounts. They aren’t all boring either.
If you somehow don’t get enough lectures in class many local organizations host free presentations on a variety of subjects.
You don’t have to be an art history major to appreciate the many galleries and arts related events in Western Mass. You can spend an evening on an art walk, an afternoon in an orchard, or just class up your cheap date with a quick peek on the way to the dive bar.
Cheap Booze You Don't Have To Wait In Line For
Do you really want to spend another Thirsty Thursday standing in line for 2 hours to drink a single pickleback before closing?
There are plenty of laid back bars with cheap booze in Western Mass. They aren’t all full of rednecks and taking an Uber back from them will cost you the same as the ride from Antonio’s during the surge.
You spend enough time in the classroom and in front of your laptop. You don’t have to go far from campus to get lost in the woods or get some fresh air. If you’re looking for more than just a hike there are always plenty of outdoor activities going on. Most are free or super cheap.
